Hairspray Island

Hairspay, the all hair island, featuring Mirada and Sinsation opened this Sunday to the public and features more hair than you can ever hope for. This also replaces Mirada Hair Mall so many of the vendors that you enjoyed from there have gone island-style to Hairspray. After all, who needs a mall dedicated to hair when you have an entire island where you can breathe hair?

April 3, 2007 - Update: Damien Fate has added a barrier beneath the walkways for those who were having issues with falling. He has also added a teleport system at the landmark spot which clearly indicates the name of the shop, the gender of styles offered at the shop, and if the shop offers freebies.

I tried it out but the whole layout pissed me off. It was hard to get around and any landmark I made in there brings me right to the front entrance again. This place is stupid.

It looked very retro but was odd to get around. I kept falling off the walkways.

You know, I went. I'm addicted to hair. But I couldn't find anything, and like cherlindrea said, I kept falling off the walkways. The idea behind an island like this should be make it as easy for people to give you their money as you can, not piss them off to the point they want to leave.

Wow, I'm quite surprised it was difficult for you to get around.

The sim is layed out in a very straight forward 'follow the path' method. You walk around and you have shops on both sides that you can walk into, just like any town.

As for the walkway, I had added a barrier beneath not long after opening as I noticed people were falling off a lot, so that shouldn't be an issue anymore.

If you have any more ideas for making Hairspray easier to use please feel free to message me in-world.

Damien Fate.

Wow there, Negative nancy. The sim is made to take you to the entrance spot. Follow the beam to get to your landmark. If its too hard to fly to the beam, then I dont know what to tell you. The sim has a Telehub, and that's how telehubs work.
I dont know how the shops are hard to find, they are laid out clearly along the path around the sim. I would certainly appreciate negative comments being told to me directly where I'd be better able to see them and help you with the problem.

Damien & Erika, it is an ease of use thing. Why should I use the landmark for Hairspray and fly across the Sim to my favorite shop when I can just use the landmark to their main shop and be right there? The Telehub does no good if it doesn't get you to the shop you want. I see I can teleport to set places but there is nothing to directly teleport to a given shop.

"The sim is layed out in a very straight forward 'follow the path' method. You walk around and you have shops on both sides that you can walk into, just like any town."

But that's not how I (or many people I know) really get around SL. While it's a beautiful build, I absolutely HATE being put at a telehub, especially when it seems like it's hard to figure out where to go from there, which it was for me. I don't have a lot of free time in SL, so when I want to go to a hair shop, I want to go directly to it, not get put somewhere in the vicinity and have to wander to find it.

"Wow there, Negative nancy. "

... so only nice comments should be left?

"The sim has a Telehub, and that's how telehubs work. "

Exactly. And quite frankly, that's the biggest problem I have. As I said... I like being able to go directly where I'm going, not plopped someplace someone thinks I should go, then have to wander hoping to find what I want.

"I would certainly appreciate negative comments being told to me directly where I'd be better able to see them and help you with the problem."

I don't expect anything to be done about this. This is purely my preference. Besides, I think your reply ("If its too hard to fly to the beam, then I dont know what to tell you.") pretty much shows that no, you don't really want to hear my opinion in-world.

I would be more than happy to hear your opinion in-world! That is why I suggested it. If its left here, its a bit hard for me to get your full opinion about it, or your suggestions as to what I can do to make it easier. Yes, I am upset by the fact that people only leave negative comments about things. I paid a bundle for this sim, and I put my own hard work into it. And then I just see negative comments left to the rest of the world but not to me. I understand that you have your preferences, but by stating it so negatively to everyone instead of to me personally just feels to me like a very hateful thing to do and prevents this community that I try to bring together from progressing. Since I *didn't* get a message from you in world, and you felt like dissecting every little thing I said out in the open, then I will ask you this here:
1) What is wrong with flying to your destination? Isn't that how most sims work? SL had telehubs everywhere not long ago and we all had to do that. A sim is not too big and you don't have to fly far.
2) What is wrong with having a central location to teleport to? This place has the two focus stores connected to it, and a teleporter. The sim is still new, and we are soon to implement a direct to store teleporter there.
I really *do* want to hear any persons opinion on how to improve Hairspray. Once again, I would appreciate it more in-world told directly to me.
Anyways, I'm sorry I'm so ranty but it just hurts to have things felt like they were said behind my back when I'm trying so hard. I am very old in SL and sometimes I dont see things like how a telehub is so 'hard'.

Well now, I can understand Washu being upset, partly because I am half owner of this sim, but also because a lot of these comments seem to be very trivial to me.

I'm sorry, I dont mean to be rude, but so what if we dont have direct tps? You are ported the the forefront of the sim where you can fly to your big red beam and be there in what 10 seconds max? That extra ten seconds is really going to hinder your work schedule isn't it? I think not. Our sim is not laggy, and there is nothing to prevent you from reaching your destination swiftly.

We care a lot more about our little group of hair people than some of you may like to believe. We set the teleport to the very edge of the sim and have everyone spread out from there. We are proud of the build, and I dont think it is so horrible that we want everyone renting in our sim have an equal chance of having someone walk down their block, instead of just teleporting to one store when they could've just done that at that person's main store as you said.

This is about showcasing all the designers, equally and fairly. This is about enjoying all the other things that our fellow developers have done, and being proud to show them ALL off.

I am very sorry that you feel that it is too much of an effort. But really, come on!!! Are we all really becoming so lazy that we cant take the ten extra seconds it would take to jump up and fly to the place marked by the beam? Dang!

I have been to a great many sims that still make use of telehubs... I have no problem with this. I for one love to take a look around at all the builds and imagination at work while on my way to my destination.

As for falling off the walkways, it was already stated that this was fixed. I for one cant really fathom how you managed to "keep falling off" it's not like the walkways are pencil thin or curly, they form a simple set of squares and there is more than enough room for 4 avies to walk across it side by side... But .. okay. That was fixed, so it's really here nor there.

But anyways, for those of you who werent' satisfied with the build, our apologies, but we have received oodles of compliments on it as well. SO it's not the same thing that you see all the time, GREAT! We pride ourselves with offering second lifers something a little different to feast their eyes on.

Oi!

Washu-

I didn't mean to dissect your comments, as much as to respond to them point by point. I can see that your feelings are hurt, and that wasn't my intent. I will msg you in world.

However, the basic point I'm trying to make is this: I'm not suggesting anything needs fixing. I'm simply saying I don't like the layout, and won't be going. I visited again today, to make sure I wasn't being too fussy, and...

I hate telehubs. I avoid sims that use them. The way I shop, I drop a LM where I like something, and think about it. If I can't get back to that spot, odds are I won't be back to buy it, simply because... well...

I like people to make it easy to give them my money. Give me demos of hair. Give me the ability to LM directly where I'm going. While it doesn't seem like a big deal to teleport in to the main hub then walk or fly where I'm going, it greatly annoys me.

Is this your problem? Not at all. But it does mean I won't be spending time at Hairspray.

You said "I'm sorry, I dont mean to be rude, but so what if we dont have direct tps? You are ported the the forefront of the sim where you can fly to your big red beam and be there in what 10 seconds max? That extra ten seconds is really going to hinder your work schedule isn't it?"

First off, when someone prefaces a comment with "I don't mean to be rude," it's generally because they intend to be rude. Is it a big deal to not have direct tps? Sometimes. The fact is, it annoys me, and it doesn't annoy you.

I've commented to washu about how I shop, and why the lack of direct TPs annoys me. The fact is, it all comes down to money. I want it to be as easy to give you my money as possible. Instead, going to Hairspray makes me annoyed. Why would I want to go someplace that annoys me just to spend my money?

"Are we all really becoming so lazy that we cant take the ten extra seconds it would take to jump up and fly to the place marked by the beam? Dang!"

Interesting judgement, but it's not really about being lazy. It's about keeping frustration down.

"I have been to a great many sims that still make use of telehubs... I have no problem with this. "

I fully understand that. I do have a problem with it. Note I haven't asked you to change anything, just stated that I personally won't be there. Does it bother you that much that one person dislikes your build?

Everyone, I like Retro so this was no a complaint.

Sinn, excuse me for not being good at walking on SL. I avoid areas with walkways, narrow bridges, and stairs with no rails because I tend to slide right off the sides.

When you try to make a new and innovative thing, it is never perfect the first time. There are always some flaws and that is no big deal as long as we acknowledge and correct them.

The creators of HairSpray did just that. They created something innovative and corrected the two flaws that were pointed out in this forum. From now on nobody will fall in the water anymore and you can teleport to your favourite shop as soon as you have entered the telehub.

What is left is an innovative sim. Yes, I use that word once again because the sim is not only daring in its never-before-seen design it is also ... the first SL sim totally dedicated to hair. Think of the possibilities. What will this do to the SL hair industry? Well for starters consumers now have a one-stop place to go when they want to shop for hair. All the big hair shops are now in HairSpray and a lot of the smaller ones to. And what will this do to the hair industry itself? Well, the future will tell of course, but .. it is quite possible that the smaller physical distance between the hair makers will stimulate interaction and creativity. The sim-owners already have plans for several hair event to boost creativity even more.

I salute Washu, Sinnocent and Damien. Not only did they have the courage to stick out their neck and put a lot of personal effort and money in the development of this new concept. They also showed that they are brave and flexible enough to listen to the suggestions of others and to improve what can be improved.

I just wanted to say that a Teleporter has been added. I will not, at this time, allow direct teleporting to the individual stores. I hope this teleporter will help everyone, and if there are more suggestions, please let me know. :)

Virtual-

I have to agree with you. After speaking with Washu in game, we discussed several things that I personally found annoying. By the end of the conversation, I think we both understood each other more clearly.

The sim is beautifully done. I love the concept behind it. And as you said, Washu (and perhaps Damien and Sinnocent) was absolutely willing to listen and brainstorm ways to make it better. That's something that is incredibly important.
